The Blingin' BillingsUnknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger20125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-63442975414122256602013-05-06T22:48:00.001-06:002013-05-06T22:48:05.888-06:00FHESo.. We've recently been thinking how horrible we've been at having FHE since being married. Since every night is hanging out with each other, we haven't really felt the need to have a designated family night.

We've recently been reading a book called visions of glory, and among many things it's helped us realign priorities in our marriage. So, this morning when we were getting ready, we discussed some options for what to do for FHE, thinking we were so super grown up and mature (at least I did, because I'm the boring accountant in the relationship). Needless to say, Dal's idea won, and I just had to share the recipe for one of my favorite family home evenings ever!

1. Start with an open space. Any happy little space.

2. Gather every possible pillow in your home. Ya, it might suck putting them back after, but trust me it'll be worth it.

3. Once you've got a pillow foundation, next step is to get adequate roofing on your oh-so-awesome fort. We had a stretchy blanket that worked perfectly without having clips, etc to keep it up (thank heavens for IKEA).

4. You may think I skipped a step by not having the blankets laid over the foundation of pillows referenced in #2 before gettin your roof squared away. No way, Jose, the blankets are WAY more funnerer (spelling intentional) to set out when you already have your roof in place.

5. Make sure you have ample beverages and snacks for movie of your choice. For us? Mushu, Crickee, and Fa Mulan graced the silver screen. But movies don't have to be the main event, we considered eating dinner in our fort, but the menu for the night was a messy chicken taco (but if you haven't ever had pioneer woman's brother's chicken tacos, you MUST try them.. Link: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/03/my-brothers-chicken-tacos/. Yes they're fried, and no you cannot skip frying the tortillas. It just wouldn't be the same!) The amount of drippings meant that fort dining for the main course was not in the cards.

We ended up reading, watching movies, having late night snacks, and just chatting in our rocking fort. Dal has officially earned the eternal position of FHE activity coordinator for this one. There's just something about giving a little salute to your five year old self with your best friend twenty years later. Though let's be honest, how are we ever going to top this next Monday??

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-90035549406818350902011-08-11T22:07:00.000-06:002011-08-11T22:07:19.023-06:00Did you know?Scorpions glow under black light...

Best...

1. After a full year of telling the basement tenants I was sewing them curtains, I FINALLY finished them. Don't worry, it was only the night before we had to put the sewing machine in storage... talk about procrastination!

2. Our old house is grateful. I don't think it's EVER been this clean. EVER.

3. There's something therapeutic and oddly relaxing to me about dejunking my life. We had only been married two and a half years, but the amount of crap that we somehow accumulated was outrageous!

4. Shopping! We've frequented IKEA and Target at least three times since moving in.

...and worst of moving

1. Sometimes I'm an idiot... like when I thought "Hey, I'll bet toilet bowl cleaner would be a great way to get the bathtub white again." Ya, might've been a good idea had I not left it for an hour and a half to crust over in there. Now our renter's bathtub looks like a smurf crime scene.

2. Our landlord has completely remodeled like half of our apartment, which is awesome! Unfortunately, the other half hasn't had anyone living in it for quite some time, so we're still finding fun little surprises. My absolute favorite are the daily appearance of the most hideous little spiders. "Kill a spider a day" is now a common phrase in the Billings apartment.

3. This move, Dal had to be gone for two nights right after we got to our new place. As fate would have it, our landlord and her two girls were also out of town. Do you know how creepy old houses are when they're empty?! I promise you, there were footsteps upstairs like every five minutes. Worst. night. of sleep. ever.

4. Saying goodbye. It's hard leaving our first and only house since marriage, as well as leaving our ward and friends!

It has now been a full week since graduating. Have things slowed down even a little? I WISH! I swear life never slows down - never waits for you to catch your breath.

Granted, it's at least slow enough for me to post :)

The last week has been a whirlwind. Graduation last Friday, birthday on Saturday, and my best friend Savannah comin' in town till Wednesday, wrapping it up with starting my studying for the CPA and re-roofing our house this morning.

It was SO fun re-living the old days with Sav: classic piano session, some legit HP time (totally rocked Voldemort's world - ya, that's right!), a little Peter Pan action, with totinos and jones to boot. I wish life could be as carefree as it used to be - where all I worried about was how I looked and whether or not my chores were done so I could hang out with friends after school. Oh the life....

What happened to that? Now I'm worried about bills, about how my boss feels about my work, and callings at church. Ick. So grown up.

That's the biggest thing that's hit me since graduating - real life is starting! Huge responsibilities, more major decisions, and a hugely lengthened perspective. Instead of thinking "just till the end of this semester", it's "where will I be in five years".

Luckily we'll still have this short summer to do a few things before I start my "real" job at Ernst and Young this fall. FIRST AND FOREMOST: DISNEYLAND! What good is graduating if you can't share it with Mickey? We're heading out in a couple weeks (who am I kidding, I'm counting down the hours - 207.5!), and we're going to have the trip of our lives. We found a rockin' connection and got in to Club 33, which is like the dream of a lifetime!!! If you don't know what that is, I plain feel sorry for you.

So there are some things to look forward to before reality hits hard, I'm just afraid they'll be gone fast!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-55125021776354531662011-01-23T09:48:00.000-07:002011-01-23T09:48:07.395-07:00What's to get? What's to get when people play hard to get?

Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth to that question. Fortunately, the phase of playing hard to get is long gone and never returning for me!

I always sit in the same chair in class. How boring is that? I can't handle change very well unless required (new semester, new job, etc.) I have a structured life that is comfortable and predictable. That grooves with me, as lame as it sounds. I'm so structured in fact, that it hurts to be creative. Good thing I'm in my final GE: History of Creativity - cus I've got a lot to learn. But to my point, when I heard the professor talk about the final project, which most people think is the easiest part of the class, I about broke into a sweat. The only guideline is that it has to be creative. ACK!

Yellow is my favorite color. Warm, homey, light, happy, spontaneous, daring, loving, mellow.

I need some serious recommendations for audiobooks. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-14739724408158594032010-11-29T22:04:00.000-07:002010-11-29T22:04:40.351-07:00Not Gonna Play Catch UpYa, ya, ya.. I know it's been almost six month since my last post. Long story short, SCHOOL happened. With that said, I'm not going to try and bring everything up to date, because I'm pretty sure that's exactly why it's taken me this long to post again. The thought of having to remember everything and put it into witty/entertaining order is more daunting for me than anything.

Which makes me think - isn't that the point of blogging? Maybe I'm just setting myself up to fail, because my journal knows better than anyone that I'm a horrible storyteller - let alone inconsistent in my contributions.

This week has been one of remembering passions for me. First - I HATE snow. The only redeeming quality is that the sooner it comes, the sooner I can start complaining that it should be spring. :) I don't snowboard or ski, so there's really no recreational value in it for me. Sure, I'll go sledding, but any activity that makes my fingers and toes go numb no matter how many layers I'm wearing just does not appeal to me. I'll take my fuzzy socks and a good book over snow play any time. To add to my repulsion, we realized at 8:55 on Sunday morning (church is bright and early at 9) that it actually had snowed, which left no time to shovel the driveway before backing out, and I swear no amount of sun will ever melt the seemingly permanent ice tracks that are there now.

Second - Cafe Rio Tostadas are probably the best semi-fast food I've ever had. Thank goodness for the person who decided to Americanize Mexican food.

Third - I had forgotten how much I love talking about the gospel with friends. I had a great phone conversation with Savannah Gardiner yesterday, and we ended up talking a lot about religion. She's found herself as a major minority (does that even make sense?) in Hawaii being one of the only Mormons, and it's given her a lot of opportunity to talk about what we believe in, etc. We talked about some of the doctrines of the church and some of the principles of the temple, and I finished the phone call feeling really uplifted, like it really made a difference in my testimony to just have discussed what I believed with someone else. I'm so grateful for friends who care about the gospel enough to truly study and seek out answers, and then share what they believe with me.

Anyway, that'll do for now. Till next time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-80129632953214047922010-07-25T22:56:00.000-06:002010-07-25T22:56:17.558-06:00Your Boys? My Boys! So, I got home tonight with every intention of plowing through some photo editing. There are about four shoots that need to get finished and sent off very soon...so tonight was the night to knock at least one out! Unfortunately, tonight is also the night that TBS decided to bring back My Boys, one of our favorite shows. The show centers around PJ, a tom boy gal who has amassed a group of friends (mostly guys, as the title suggests) that live for sports, love food, and always have a good time. The humor is perfect, we die laughing literally every episode.

Needless to say I got through only four of lets see...hmmm...55 pictures? It's going to be a long week :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-71052867879624520972010-07-10T23:03:00.000-06:002010-07-10T23:03:37.415-06:00Goin' Walk-a-bout'in

Let me give you a quick recap. Warning: when I say "quick", I really don't mean quick, a lot happened that week!

Thursday. We pull into Vegas around dinner time, get settled into our hotel room at the Flamingo and call up my dad's friend Greg. Greg just so happens to be Marie Osmond's manager (did I mention the hotel room was free? Crazy huh?!), and arranged for us to see the Donny and Marie show that night. We get to the theater down in the casino and Greg takes us down to the very front booth--VIP seating? Better believe it. The show was so great--clean, witty, entertaining, and educating (in that I had no idea how huge these guys were! Side note: Greg said that these guys were so big that Donny and Michael Jackson were rivals of sorts--that completely blew my mind).

About an hour into the show, I start squirming bad. Anyone who knows me at all knows that I have the smallest bladder in the world, and that night was no exception. About an hour and a half through the show, I give in and ask my Dad where the bathroom is. He leans over to Greg and asks the same thing, and he says, "Oh don't worry, just follow me." We go through a side door in the theater and backstage, up the theater steps and into Marie's dressing room. I was so mad I had left my phone down at the booth so that I could prove it!

The show ends, and Greg takes us around the back side of the casino, where audience members pay out the nose to have a personal introduction and photo with big D&M. We got our own snapshot with the two of them (we haven't heard from Greg yet, or I'd put that pic up right here), and then went up to wait for Marie while she got out of costume.

This is from Marie's dressing room--notice her adorable teal dress that she wore on tv when she was a little girl! (forgive the photo quality--courtesy of my iPhone)

Another one of my dad's friends, Steve, met us there and when Marie was ready, we all went out to dinner. Within the first few minutes, we already had gotten a lot of Marie's personality. She is exactly like my mom. Way freaky. She can talk to anyone about anything, and has this way of looking for hope and supporting the good in people. We ordered, and within minutes the entire kitchen came out to make sure there wasn't anything else we'd like. They went above and beyond, offering fresh fruit that wasn't even mentioned on the menu, and supplying us with extra shakes and sides to boot. I could get used to that! Two hours later, we'd chatted about what seems like every topic known to man, and we'd stuffed ourselves to the brim. We finally said goodnight, and hit the hay.

End day one. I told you it wasn't going to be quick!

Friday. After only six hours of sleep, Dad pops out of bed and wakes us up. Half hour later we pull up to Red Rocks, Nevada, and start hiking. This place is gorgeous!
Crazy cool pitches, with some ridiculously small belay stations. Imagine fitting three adults on a chip out of a cliff the size of a laptop. That's how big "the top" was. Two words for you: in sane! ;)

We got done early, so we had plenty of time when we got back to the hotel to shower and clean up before dinner. My mom and Nate pulled into town (they went climbing the next day), and we hit the buffet at Rio. Dad called up Greg again, and Greg said "How bout some tickets to La Rev?" Who can say no to free tickets? The show was interesting, we had a good time. After gelato at the Bellagio, we fell into bed.

Saturday. On the open road again, we made it to CA early afternoon thanks to the calm of weekend traffic and the ingeniousness (is that a word?) of the maps app via iPhone. After checking in, we hooked up with Sav and Riley and hit the beach.

Hanging out with them made me realize how much I miss them! It's going to stink when they're clear in Hawaii, but hey, that just means another vacation is in order!

After they left for home, Dal and I hit Downtown Disney. I was absolutely giddy and ecstatic that Disneyland was only two days away!

Sunday. Slept in. Late. We were exhausted from the past three days. But we made it in time for church, and got to be a part of a great testimony meeting. I love the fact that it's the same. Everywhere. We hit Newport beach again, and this time made sure we got the "in"famous (in-famous means more than famous--can anyone name the movie?) beach bars. This place dips em and coats them with nuts or sprinkles while you watch. Yum. And I got to use my birthday present!

That night we hooked up with my good friend Katie Lopez. She just graduated from culinary school in January and took us to a great local Peruvian restaurant for dinner. A-maze-ing.

After, we hung out at the hotel and caught the Disneyland firework show...got some pretty sweet pics.
Best ever. Oo! Funny story. So, we're waiting in line, and about twenty people back from us this dad and his son wait behind us. They had the sweetest costumes. They were both pirates, and the little kid had the entire getup--shoes and everything! I couldn't stop smiling, and because the line is so...twisted (Disney movie reference...95 gold stars for that one), we passed close enough for me to not feel too weird asking if I could take a picture with him. The boy's dad said, "Sure", so I leaned over the fence to just get my head in the pic with this kid, and the next thing I know, the Dad has thrown the poor thing over the fence and into my arms! That wasn't awkward at all.... Anyway, after feeling super embarrassed (and slightly pedophilic), we got a rockin' picture of the worlds coolest pirate.

We finished the night off with Space Mountain again (I'm serious, I so have Dal converted to knowing Space Mountain is the best ride, we went three times! There are sports blogs, hunting blogs and all sorts of stuff... But, I will still call it "Bloggin'" so that I feel better about it. K moving on...
So after reading through the plethora of posts that Lauren has put up here I figure that I should throw one up here to keep things in perspective. With only one person posting things can get a little biased so I don't want you folks to think that I am too great, great I may be, but not too great. Since she has so graciously shared the one or two highlights that exist, making me out to be such a great husband, I figured that I should not only share some of the amazing things that she does but also shed light on a weakness or two that she hasn't shared... I am sure you gals (cuz I know that there are no dudes that read these blog things) can sympathize with what I will say.
So first, all the good stuff about Lauren... :) She has told a story about her birthday so its time for mine. First thing you need to know about Lauren is that she knows me better than anyone, and so she uses my needs to her advantage. I was sitting at work and Alex comes over to my desk, picks up my phone and walks away. A minute later he comes back and says, "Yup, I thought so..." and once again, walked away. About twenty minutes later I find out that my loverly wife has been plotting to send me pizza at work... 1st need understood, I love pizza! Next we went out to dinner, where you might ask, Texas Roadhouse, need #2 I love steak! While at dinner she gave me my present which was a gift card to Cabelas so that I could get myself a gun that I had been wanting for quite some time, need #3 I am a hillbilly that loves guns. Also she let me watch basketball while at dinner, need #4.. As you can see they are piling up. I could go on and on but I think I will end there because it was my birthday and somethings don't need to be said. So it short, it was the best birthday EVER and its all because of my amazing wife.
Next reason she is so awesome! This was a few months ago, October to be exact. As already mentioned I am a hillbilly who loves guns and every October there is a small event called the deer hunt. Some of you may be familiar with this, it is another reason why Lauren is so amazing, to those of you that don't know, we got married on October 9th and not later in the month so that there would never be a conflict with opening day of deer season and our anniversary. Love you Lauren! But last year Lauren decided to not only let me go but she tagged along. It was so much fun, if you ask me, Lauren was even present when the only deer that was harvested that year was taken. What a good sport. Once again, she must love me.
So not that you know that Lauren is so amazing let us take me off my pedestal that Lauren has created. I am just going to do this in list format, cuz its easier that way. 1. I am addicted to hunting and fishing, meaning that when I can afford it there will be many times that I will be gone for days on end. Also, I like to watch hunting and fishing shows.. Yes Brian, your not alone. 2. I am addicted to sports and though Lauren is such a good sport I know she hates it. TNT 40 days of playoff basketball and march madness is the worst time of the year, for her. #3 I eat way to late at night.. I am a snacker! #4 This may be blatantly obvious to some of you by now, but I have horrible grammar so anytime I write a paper, Lauren has to make sure I didn't mess it up too bad. (Please don't tell any of my professors.) #5 I am currently in the process of making a "Man Cave" in the garage and Lauren does nothing but smile anytime I talk about it cuz she knows it lame. And last but not least, #6 I sing in the shower, loud and not well. This wouldn't be a big deal... if the downstairs neighbors had not commented on my singing. I think multiple times, but I continue to do it, cuz I love it.
Well this is all from me for now, sorry it is so long but to be honest the posts from me will be few and far between so I had to make an impact. Toodaloo.Dallinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11298376935467036334noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-22269109450951164052010-04-25T22:56:00.000-06:002010-04-25T22:56:20.649-06:00One year older and....wiser too?6:42 am. I'm in a deep sleep. I'd forgotten to set my alarm the night before on purpose. Who doesn't sleep in on their birthday?

6:43 am. I'm sitting bolt-upright in bed, scared to death.

My dad, brother Nate and sister Lynley decided it'd be a great idea to take me out to breakfast on my birthday. They didn't call to wake me up, no no no, that would've been too calm and peaceful for the occasion. Instead, they pounded on our bedroom window (which is about a foot and a half away from my head, mind you) like the world was about to end or something. So much for sleeping in.

We hit up Callie's Cafe. It's quite a find, and I'll admit that I have Steph's parents to thank for it (That's another story though). Callie's is the kind of place you'll find the same people there at the same times every morning. It's got that homey small-town feel, with home style breakfast food that well outstrips Denny's or IHOP. Definite recommendation.

A little background before I get into the presents. I HATE surprises. I can't stand not knowing stuff. With that in mind, you can imagine that when I found out about a month before my birthday that Dal was getting me a lens (much to his chagrin), I was ecstatic that I would be completely in-the-know. Also because I knew he was getting me a lens, I made sure he understood that he couldn't get me anything else expensive, because the lens was already over our budget. He agreed.

The night before, Dal calls me as he pulls up. "Hey, can you come out and help me bring some stuff in?"
"Dal...you better not have."
"Just come help me."

Of course, he had not one, not two, but eight gifts on the front seat of his truck. "You didn't say how many inexpensive gifts I could get you," was all he said.

Well the first was the lens, amazing! Then I got into the inexpensive gifts, which went down like this:
1. pack of Princess and the Frog stamp rings (I'd recently asked if I could get my wedding ring re-dipped...this was the compromise--eight new rings!)
2. bobby pins (Not just any, these are really thick ones for crafty flower making---I'm super excited)
3. gardening gloves (the week before I was pulling weeds bare handed)
4. sidewalk chalk, to help appease my inner child
5. coloring book and crayons (see 4, also to keep me entertained on our road trip to CA this week)
6. Toy story sand bucket and beach toys (California.......here we come!)

The six listed above were definitely within the inexpensive gift range--all dollar store items, but being who he is, he never quite follows the rules exactly. The last gift was a new camera bag that fits the new lens perfectly.

After work, we hopped into the car and hit up the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy. Check it out!

Highlights:

In the Utah section, along the back wall in the main room is a fake pond. Or at least we thought. We seriously sat for like three minutes trying to decide if it was real or not. Finally, the bullfrog we were using as a gauge actually breathed, solving the mystery. It's real folks, it's real.
How cool is this?

The ray's! Not gonna lie, it took me aback when it felt silky...a little creepy.
In the "hands-on" area, I stuck my hand in with a handful of green brittle starfish. They have super long spidery arms, and one of them wrapped its arm around my finger and suckered on. Made me blush, I'd never had a starfish kiss before!

Jellyfish. They're so cool in and of themselves, but we had just watched the oceans episode of Life just the day before, and I still swear these same jellyfish were on that episode...oober cool.
Don't ask me why, but I was fascinated by the seahorses. They had Dwarf Seahorses that were only about an inch big...so cute! The one in the picture is a Giant Seahorse, more like four inches.
We finished off the night with dinner at The Roof in downtown. Amazing view, great food, perfect atmosphere. All in all a perfect day, I really don't know how Dal will be able to live up to it next year!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-19223471486892488442010-04-12T22:33:00.001-06:002010-04-12T22:35:17.279-06:00Mic Check...A while back, I was really excited because I thought to bring my camera to the occasional hang out that we have with Michelle, Sam, Steph, and James. Of course I was upset when we pulled up and I had forgot it. To explain my disappointment to Dal, I said, "Dal, I was gonna take pictures of us and our friends," to which he replied, "What friends? If we had friends we'd have pictures with them."

Well HA! We have friends. :) And please forgive, it was night-time and our house lighting sucks, pardon the language.

After only a year and a half of living at our house, we've got curtains! Thanks to IKEA, borrowed thread, and a noisy sewing machine, our windows are happily covered.

Today I came out of my first "sickness" (the flu...ick) since we been married--hallelujah for a fantastic immune system! How many people don't get a cold or something for a year and a half? That's celebration-worthy.

It's Easter week, which means new Easter outfits! And anyone who knows me knows I can't say no to shopping. I absolutely love the dress I picked out, which means that Spring needs to get here pronto and actually stay this time..

As nerdy as this is, I totally dominated the last temple in Zelda tonight while Dal worked on a big project for school. Ya, it felt good. Tomorrow the evil Ganondorf will go down!

I got an email from Tanner! Oh, I mean Elder Francis... He's down in Brazil, and this is his last week in the MTC. He's such a stud, I miss him insanely, but he's rockin' the town down there.

Finally, we ordered some odds and ends to put some final touches to our shower about a month ago. The place we ordered from told us it would probably be the last week in May before everything got there--ya, they came in today! I seriously can't wait, I was so bummed to have to wait so long, but no longer!! Wow, I just realized how pathetic that is...that's a very "married thing" to get excited over... but it's brushed nickel, how can I not be?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-18644663987675673592010-03-12T23:01:00.000-07:002010-03-12T23:01:52.141-07:00SistersAll I have to say is, these two made me want to do a shoot with all seven Faber sisters!
...experience with the Atlanta airport. Have you seen that thing? The terminals are so incredibly massive that they had to build their own underground subway just so people could make their transfers in time. I'd be willing to bet that it takes at least twenty five minutes to cross an entire terminal. Two words for you: slightly insane.
Luckily, we made our connecting flight in Atlanta, and I remember the moment I realized we were flying over Florida we had just dropped through the clouds and I thought "huh, looks like one big swamp." Yeah, it was only the Everglades--the third biggest national park in the US. Guess which ones hit number one and two? Death Valley and Yellowstone. Crazy cool.

Random side note: Living in Utah, I know I take the incredible scenery and opportunities here for granted. Think about it. When was the last time you took a trip to the Grand Canyon or camped down in Zion's? Dal and I have recently resolved to make this summer one of soaking up Utah's amazing beauty--so if you're up for hiking the Subway, going rock-climbing, or river rafting, call us up!

We step off the plane and I immediately fell in love with the climate. It was a perfect 70 degrees at night, and the humidity did wonders for my skin and hair. Not gonna lie, I could definitely live with that.

First...
...step on a cruise ship.

Obviously, these things are huge! Ours wasn't even the biggest one, and we could fit about one and a half Titanics in it. Eleven floors, and I don't think we even saw the entire ship within the 7 days that we had. For any of you who've been on a cruise, one of the first things you think of when you get to your room is "man, this thing is huge!" OK, so maybe if you had a suite you might've thought that, but we were definitely in the bargain cruisers area, where the rooms were all bed, and the bathrooms barely fit a shower and a toilet in. But come on, when the price is free.99, you can't complain too much right?

One last cruise ship comment--get a load of those halls! It was like those nightmares when you're running as fast as you can away from some murderer or natural disaster and wherever you're trying to get to keeps getting farther and farther away or you don't seem to move though you're trying as hard as you can. Hate those!

First...
...attempt at scrapbooking. This needs a little background. So. Dal won this cruise at work, and it was part of a huge promotion almost identical to Willy Wonka's "Golden Ticket" search. Six customers ended up finding these golden tickets, and about twenty five employees of Provo Craft and Michael's were chosen to go as well. As you can imagine, the employees had the awesome opportunity to hold scrapbooking events all week to kind of congratulate all the customer winners. Luckily, I got to go. All the packets were already put together--all I had to do was cut and paste--now, that's my kind of scrapbooking.

I really don't have anything against it, I just don't have the creative capacity to come up with 40+ pages worth of cute, relevant decorations. Forget about coordinating colors and penmanship! The cricut "makes it so easy", but all it does for me is give me way too many options, so this whole show-up-we've-decided-everything-for-you-already thing was heaven!

First...
...time knowing the people who clean my hotel room. OK cruise stateroom, not hotel, but it felt exactly the same. That was a little strange. Riston. Great guy, but it was weird knowing that every day when we left, he was coming in and cleaning up after us. He did leave us little presents though...

At one of the nightly game shows, the couple that won got a book on how to make these towel animals. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.

First...
...dine n' dash. OK, so the food is included in the fare, but it felt almost dirty to order an appetizer, two entree's, and dessert, and just get up and leave without taking a check.

Quick side note: Our cruise line was Holland America, and I have to say I don't think I'll ever go on another cruise line. The passengers were probably 93% senior citizen's, and then the Cricut group. There were only a handful of people from ages 5-30, so Dal and I stuck out like sore thumbs everywhere we went. I love old people!

First...
...karaoke competition. Savannah may need to jog my memory, but I'm pretty sure this was the first time I'd ever done a legit karaoke competition. Advanced to the final round baby!
I would live in CA in a heartbeat to have the soothing sound of waves, the totally tubular experience of surfing, and lounging on a beach towel every Saturday, jamming to classic rock. Our first beach walk happened at the first cruise stop--Grand Turk. The port there was really lame, but we found a side-beach to explore. We happened upon the coolest site, a conch graveyard. I felt like Nala and Simba. Disney has so infiltrated my life.

....I have a thing for old people. :) Last night I got a chance to go play for the good folks out at The Seville in Orem. It all started last semester during finals week. I had this amazing professor for the Master's Finance course who had an "option" final. In a nutshell, that means that if we passed the class oral final, we had the "option" to take the individual final, or, if we were comfortable with the grades we had earned to that point, we could complete a service final. I arranged to go play piano at this small retirement home, and long story short, they canceled on me. I ended up calling The Seville on a whim, and it turned out that they had time that day for me to come by. After playing for a bit, the activities coordinator asked me if I would be willing to come play background music for their Christmas dinner that night. Of course I agreed, and decided to bring along the harp as well. After that night, I agreed to come out in January, which was last night.
These folks are some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. I seriously never practice, mess up all the time, and they are so grateful for it anyway. I think my favorite comment was from this adorable lady who said "just think, when we all get to heaven you'll already know how to play."
Dal was nice enough to come out with me, and it's thanks to him for the photos. I didn't notice myself, but he told me after that there was the sweetest couple there. The wife was still one of those gals who liked to get ready for her husband, and still wore makeup. Dal was watching them throughout, and he noticed that the husband had a tan stain on his shoulder. At first he didn't think much of it, but then he realized that the wife was on the other side, head on the guy's shoulder. Obviously it was from her. When he told me after, I couldn't help but smile. I am so going to be that way when we're old--maybe not the lots of make-up part, but definitely snuggly. It's always a great night when you get a new life goal. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-50032134624208525352010-01-16T17:08:00.003-07:002010-01-16T17:09:25.033-07:00And so now we start again...So now that school is finally over and we have a minute to breathe, I realized that we never did a Christmas card and unfortunately, it's a little too late to throw one together. So...sorry! I had every intention of sending some out if that counts for anything... Oh well, maybe that can be one of our resolutions: to actually get a Christmas card out before Christmas. :)

The new year has brought a few new things with it. Dal won us a cruise through his work, which we absolutely can't wait for. We're going to the Caribbean for 7 days, and the best part is--Dal is getting paid while we're gone! How sweet is that? We leave in less than two weeks, and are just praying that we don't get uber sunburned after being so white!

I started my internship with Ernst and Young last week, and that has been an adventure in and of itself. All I've done to this point is sit in trainings, but fortunately Monday is when I "really" start so hopefully the days go by a little quicker from now on!

The new year also brought us Band Hero. One word: A-freakin'-mazing!! Oh my goodness, I don't think I can even explain how awesome this game is! I can't lie, there are very few things better than having friends over and taking over the rock world one song at a time. :) So, if you ever have the urge, just let me know--I literally can't say no to rockin' out!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3393115737493078629.post-52917968648587750132009-11-18T15:23:00.001-07:002009-11-19T09:55:35.171-07:00Only the Beginning...So...after much ado, I have caved to the blogging "black hole". I realized yesterday after reading some of my friend's blogs that I rarely ever write in my journal, and that blogging is a great way to keep a family journal of sorts. That probably isn't great news to anyone who may end up reading this someday, but I know I certainly will sleep better at night knowing that I'm keeping up on journaling.

By way of introduction, I'm Lauren! To be brutally honest, I'm not that interesting to read about. Luckily, I am married to my husband. If anyone knows Dal and I, they know that Dal is the life of the party, and I got lucky enough to ride along. We've been married for a year and a little, and have absolutely loved our time together. Now, some of you are thinking "Come on, married life isn't all peachy, you can't possibly have loved every minute together." To that I say touche, but honestly, out of the 405 days we've been married, we've had maybe 1 or 2 days that were "less than great"--literally 0 days have been terrible. Seriously, Dal is the champ for being married to me, especially on those days when I refuse to put makeup on, sport the scary hair bun, and wear sweats with slippers in public. :)

I'm currently in BYU's Master of Accountancy program, (2 more semesters left--can I get a woot?) and de-stress from work and school by spending time with the hub. He's at UVU right now working on generals--in the "I'm trying to figure out what I want to do, but really not sure yet" limbo. I work at a high technology company that is on the cutting edge in SSD's (that sounds super cool, but don't ask me what it means--I have only a very vague idea) called Fusion IO. The company is doing incredibly well, and who knows? Perhaps we'll be looking at the company going public soon. Dallin is working for Provo Craft, a scrapbooking company based in Spanish Fork that is renowned for its Cricut, an electronic dye cutting machine. Whenever we meet new people and he tells them about his company, he always follows the description of the company with a comment to the effect of: "Don't worry, I've managed to hang on to my manhood, even though I'm a professional scrapbooker." He works in product development, which really is one of the more "manly" departments.

In the past few months we've gotten into photography, and have loved it. We're very amateur and would prefer just to use it as a hobby, but it's an expensive hobby so we've got to pay for it somehow. Dal has found his niche to be in nature photography--he's got some great long exposures and captures of water. I love all things people: babies, kids, families, couples, parents, grandparents, etc. I'm fascinated by how different every individual is, and love trying to get down to "who that person is" and tackling the challenge of capturing that individual's self. It makes every shoot unique and exciting for me. Now the fact that I mentioned this hobby of ours probably means I'm going to have to figure out how to start a website so I can send future readers to it. I'll get back to you on that.

Well I'm in class right now, which means I should probably be paying attention. More to come!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
